I listen to music a lot. I don't have a huge music collection, but I have a fair amount. I often use music to reflect or magnify my mood. Or to calm down at night. Or whatever. I just like music, so I often have it around.
Some songs have memories and people attached to them so strongly that I cannot hear the song without thinking of them. I've come up with a list of some such songs. There are a lot more songs that sometimes make me think of people or events, but for this list, I'm talking about such strong associations that I normally can not hear the song without thinking of a particular person and/or memory, at least briefly. Some of them are amusing. Some are tender. Some are bittersweet. Most make me smile regardless.
I'll probably think of more as time goes by and update this entry. I'm not going to specify whom these songs make me think of. Most of you will probably know which songs are yours. Any that are grouped together refer to the same person. In a couple of cases, the person the song reminds me of may not even know or remember the song, but it's connected nonetheless. In one case, the person I'm reminded of has passed away. So without further ado (read "longwindedness"), here are some of the culprits which bring people to mind without fail:
For Good, from Wicked
Unwritten Letter, Vienna Teng
Una Notte a Napoli, Pink Martini
As Long As You're Mine, from Wicked
Samson, Regina Spektor
Sexual Healing, Marvin Gaye
I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas
Lazybones, Harry Connick, Jr.
Just Like Me, Harry Connick, Jr.
Lullabye (Goodnight, My Angel), Billy Joel
Lilly, Pink Martini
Popular, from Wicked
Wind It Up, Gwen Stefani
You Are My Sunshine
I Wonder When He Comes Again
Agony, from Into the Woods
The Other Hours, Harry Connick, Jr.

I want to hear that Hippo song! It sounds great :) I'm surprised "Agony" isn't on there *giggle* Whenever I hear it I see a certain small apartment and sock puppets...
Oh my gosh! You're totally right! I actually can't hear that without thinking of sock puppets. OK, it's going on the list. Thanks! :-)
Hmmm... I wonder which ones are mine. :)
Yes, yes, yes - agony makes me think of you and the puppets, too! Sometimes the word agony pops into my head and I just have to laugh. Thanks for the invite!
Maybe you should tell your parents that you want a Hippopotamus for Christmas? I think they might consider it - I really do! ;-D I don't know why that makes me tear up and want to cry right now! Blame it on OTT pregnancy emotions, I think. :-)
I have no idea which song might be mine and even if I did I wouldn't admit to it.
Thanks for the laugh.
I thought I was the only one who loved the "I want a Hippopotomas for Christmas song!" I love that idea, coming up with lists of songs that have memories of people attached to them. Kim and I did this thing on the way home from Portland once where we put my iPod on shuffle and every song that came on, we had to say what the song reminded us of. It was cool because I got to hear so many mundane details about her life that normally would not come up...like trying to find a parking spot at her complex after going to Krispy Kremes. Anyway, thanks for inviting me to read your blog. I love it. It was so funny, I thought it was from you, but I wasn't sure, and then I saw the word "clinically," and I knew. : )I tried the blogging world, but realized I was horrible at it.
