Star Trek Surprise

When I saw previews for the new Star Trek movie, I thought it looked like it would either be really good or colossally bad. Well, I saw it last night with a friend, and I actually enjoyed it! Go fig. It's hard to tell how I would have reacted if I hadn't watched the series as a kid or the original movies (mostly 2-4, but up to 6), and it's not a masterpiece of film by any stretch of the imagination, but it was fun. I got a kick out of the young versions of the original characters. A couple of them were harder to accept: Spock and McCoy (Bones). The actor playing McCoy seemed to be a bit forced in mimicking the original character, and Spock just...well, it was hard to transition from Heroes' Sylar to Spock, and he just didn't seem quite right...maybe it's partially that his features aren't angular enough. But I thought Uhura was PERFECT, and most of the rest were really well cast. Kirk was just as cocky and American in all the worst ways as you'd expect. Chekov was boyish and funny. Simon Pegg as Scotty was a fun and appropriate surprise. But I'll refer to The Onion news for an entertaining assessment:
